Marriage and family therapy is the study of marriage and family therapy including specialized issues, theories and techniques, and introduction to marriage and family counselling skills. The students are prepared for marriage and family therapy as a field of professional study and the students may also study child welfare, education, healthcare, law.
An Accredited College/University creates a pathway for the students to enrol in marriage and family therapy programs offered by the Colleges/University which are funded by the federal government or the state government.

The marriage and family therapy course teaches students about lifespan development, long-term relationships, couples psychotherapy and domestic violence, theory and practice of marital/family therapy, general psychology, and psychosomatic tests. An Associate’s degree requires 90-96 credits and takes 2 years to be completed. This course covers the fundamentals of marriage and therapy programs.
A Bachelor’s degree requires 100-120 credits and takes 4 years to be completed. This course provides the base foundation of the advanced studies in marriage and family therapy programs.
A Master’s degree requires 50-60 credits and takes 2 years to be completed. This course will prepare students to work in private practice or offer their services in hospitals, clinics or educational institutes.
A Doctorate’s degree requires 69-99 credits and takes 3-4 years to be completed. This course provides guidelines that equip the students with applicable information that can help you succeed in your goal of becoming a marriage and family therapist.
The minimum GPA requirement to apply for admission in marriage and family therapy programs falls between 2.8-3.00 or higher.
