Presidential Scholarships: A bird’s eye view

The dawn of the esteemed honor by the Department of Education of The Federal Government of the United States of America is combed back to 1964. It was an honorary decision for the Department of Education to recognize the epitomical virtues of high school seniors with exceptional merit in the fields of academics, leadership, and devotion to serving their alma mater and society.
In 1979, the eligibility criteria were branched to pupils with note-worthy excellence in the discipline of Fine Arts namely visual, creative, and performing arts.

2015 witnessed further branching of the eligibility criteria, incorporating students with an illustrious feat in the areas of vocational and technical research.

As many as 161 prodigies are christened as Presidential Scholars every year. Presidential Scholarship is the highest stature awarded to high schoolers in the United States.

What are the requisites for Presidential Scholarship eligibility?

Students who triumph in justifying the credentials for the program are nominated to be prospective Presidential Scholars. Herein, we have listed different components of the program admissibility :

General Component

The general component comprises students who are judged on their academic performance. It includes the following:

  • US nationals qualify for this component.

  • Students who are going to be citizens or about to earn a legal PR of the US by the application time limit can also apply for the program.

  • It is imperative for the applicant to be the bearer of a graduate certificate or diploma degree within August 2020.

  • Students with a median grade point of 4.0 are eligible.

  • According to the statistics of 2019, the qualifying median SAT and ACT scores were 1500 and 34 respectively to meet the requisites of the program.

  • Nomination by the Chief State School Officer or one of the partner organizations of the Department of Education of the Federal Government is also taken into consideration.

Arts Component

For the Arts Component, students with exceptional careers in Art and Craft are invited to apply for the scholarship. The Arts component will include the following:

  • US nationals qualify for this component.

  • Students who are going to be citizens or about to earn a legal PR of the US by the application time limit can also apply for the program.

  • It is imperative for the applicant to be the bearer of a graduate certificate or diploma degree within August 2020.

  • Students with eminent visual, creative, and performing arts records can register.

  • Involvement in the National YoungArts Foundation nationalized YoungArts program is fundamental to be concurrent with the qualifying credentials.

CTE component

For the CTE component, students with an excellent career in technical education are invited to apply for the scholarship. The CTE component comprises of the following:

  • US nationals qualify for this component.

  • Students who are going to be citizens or about to earn a legal PR of the US by the application time limit can also apply for the program.

  • It is imperative for the applicant to be the bearer of a graduate certificate or diploma degree within August 2020.

  • Laudable students with an acclaimed contribution in fields of career and technical education are eligible.

  • Nomination by the States’s Chief School Officer is taken into account for the scholarship program.

Students receive invitations for applying to the Presidential Scholarship program. Self-application to the same is not regarded as a valid application.

How can you apply?

Timeline for Presidential Scholarship

The timeline for the Presidential Scholarship is as follows:

  • January- Students are invited to apply for the program

  • February- Candidates are required to submit all the necessary documents/portfolio by the deadline. Non-fulfillment of including the essential documents can lead to the cancellation of the student application.

  • April – Announcement of the semifinalists commences mid-April. There are about 500 shortlisted candidates competing in the semifinals.

  • May – Scholars are declared by May first week. The result list comprises 121 academic scholars, 20 art scholars, and 20 scholars in the domain of career and technical learning.

  • June – Scholars are invited to Washington D.C to attend the National RecognitionProgram.
