Grants are often called “gift aid” because they are free money. Financial aid doesn’t have to be repaid, except in certain circumstances.
Federal Pell Grant
Federal Pell Grants usually are awarded only to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's or a professional degree. (In some cases, however, a student enrolled in a postbaccalaureate teacher certification program might be eligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant).
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant(FSEOG)
Jacksonville State University receives a certain amount of FSEOG/SEOG funds each year from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Federal Student Aid. Once the full amount of JSU’s FSEOG/SEOG funds has been awarded to students, no more FSEOG/SEOG awards can be made for that year.
Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education(TEACH) Grant
A TEACH Grant is different from other federal student grants because it requires you to take certain kinds of classes to get the grant and then do a certain kind of job to keep the grant from turning into a loan. The TEACH Grant Program provides grants of up to $4,000 a year to students who are completing or plan to complete course work needed to begin a career in teaching.
State Grants
Alabama Student Grant Program
This grant is available only to students at an eligible independent Alabama college or university. This is not a need-based program. Grant amounts vary from year-to-year based on the availability of funds, but cannot exceed $1,200 per academic year.
Alabama Student Assistance Program(ASAP) Grant
ASAP is a need-based, state/federal grant ranging from $300 to $5,000 per academic year. Eligible students are undergraduate students who are Alabama residents attending eligible Alabama institutions.
Loans
If you apply for financial aid, you may be offered loans as part of your financial aid offer at JSU. A loan is an amount of money you borrow and must pay back with interest.
Types of loans provided are:
-
Federal Stafford Subsidized Loans
-
Federal Stafford Unsubsidized Loans
-
Federal PLUS Loans
Federal Work-Study Program
Federal Work-Study provides part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses.
