Scholarships

Southern Connecticut State University shares multiple scholarship resources which serves as a cushion for students paying for college by earning free scholarship money.

SCSU Foundation Based Scholarships: This comprises of an assortment of scholarships, namely:

  • Daniel Ort Memorial Endowment: This scholarship  applies for undergraduates with academically outstanding performance who are enrolled full time in the Honors College of the University.

  • Frederick DeVita & Teresa M. Sirico Endowed Scholarship: It is applicable for sophomores, juniors or seniors , or a graduate student majoring in Recreation, Tourism and Leisure.

  • Italian American Historical Society Endowed Scholarship: The scholarship is renewable one applicable for student(s) majoring or minoring in Italian. 

  • Jessie Elizabeth Sandler Scholarship for Nursing Students: It is  applicable for undergraduate students enrolled full or part time in the School of Health & Human Services and accepted into and majoring in Nursing with a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA). 

  • Mildred Sternschuss Sneiderman Memorial Fund: This applies for full time undergraduate students admitted to the Early Childhood Education certification program.

  • Marco & Alda Samela Memorial Scholarship: The recipient(s) with priority consideration to non-ambulatory or semi-ambulatory or deaf, blind or legally blind students may apply. They must have completed 24 credits at the university.

Grants

Students must demonstrate financial need to be considered for the following grants on the basis of full-time enrollment. Grants may be reduced or canceled for part-time enrollment.

Federal Grants

These grants are applicable to matriculated undergraduate candidates exclusively.

  • Federal Pell Grants (PELL): Grants go up to $6,150, although the amount is viable to change during the course of the year.

  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG): Those with priority to Pell recipients have a zero expected family contribution (EFC) avail SEOG grants at Southern range from $200 to $500 per academic year. Funds are limited and depend on Southern's yearly allocations.

State Grants

  • Roberta B. Willis Scholarship Grant (formerly Governor's Scholarship) (GOV-N): This award ranges from $650 to $3,000 per academic year available to undergraduate students who are Connecticut residents. 

Institutional Grants 

  • Connecticut State University Grant (CSUG):  This is exclusively to assist undergraduate students regardless of residency based on funding availability and the information on the FAFSA.

  • Connecticut State University Grant (CSUG): These grants have similar functions as above for graduate students having a minimum of 9 credits or part-time students with 4.5 - 8.5 credits in each semester.

Loans

Undergraduate Loans

  • Direct Subsidized Loans: These loans are to be repaid and have an interest rate of 4.53% for the academic year 2019-20. The government charges an  origination fee of 1.509%.

  • Direct Unsubsidized Loans: The interest rate and origination fee is similar to that of subsidized loans where the student is responsible for paying interests during all periods.

  • Direct Parent Loans: These have an interest rate of 7.08% for the academic year 2019-20. The government charges an  origination fee of 4.236%.

Graduate Loans

  • Direct Unsubsidized Loans: These loans have an interest rate of 6.08% for the academic year 2019-20. The government charges an  origination fee of 1.509% and the student is responsible for paying interests during all periods.

  • Direct Graduate PLUS Loans: These have an interest rate of 7.08% for the academic year 2019-20. The government charges an  origination fee of 4.236%.
