There are many ways to pay for college. Federal aid, loans, grants, scholarships and student jobs can make college more affordable and accessible to students. Graduate students can reduce tuition and other costs with assistantships and fellowships, as well as grants outside University of Illinois at Chicago. The total financial aid provided is $155,533,887.
Scholarships
The Honors College offers a limited number of scholarships for incoming first-year students. All Honors College scholarships are based on merit, while some are also based on need, as determined by FAFSA. For the incoming first year students these scholarships are awarded:
- Kerr Scholarship
- Full In-State tuition and fees
- The Honors Scholars Award
- Honors College Academic Excellence Award
- Honors College Academic Distinction Award
Grants
The university not only offers scholarships which are majorly merit-based, it also offers granst which are essentially gift aids that are need-based. The grants for UIC students comes from the federal government, the state and the instituion. Let's look at examples of all of those types of grants.
Federal Grants
- Federal Pell Grant: This federal grant is awarded to undergraduate students from low-income families.
- Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant: This federal grant is awarded to undergraduate students from low-income families too, additionally the students have to be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant, and have to be enrolled for atleast a half-time program.
- Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant: Undergraduate, graduate and post-baccalaureate students who are enrolled in a certification program for a high need teaching field and meet academic achievement requirements (3.25 cumulative GPA) are eligible to receive this grant.
State Grant
- Monetory Award Program (MAP): The State of Illinois funds the MAP Grant, which ranges in awards of $300 to $5340 for the full academic year. Eligible students (and parents, if dependent) must be Illinois residents, and undergraduates.
Institutional Grants
- UIC University Opportunity Grant: The UIC Opportunity Grant is a new program beginning in the 2019/2020 academic year. The Opportunity Grant can be renewed for up to 8 paid semesters for incoming students and 4 paid semesters for transfer students.
- UIC Housing Assitance Grant: Illinois residents who reside in-campus and are receiving Pell Grants are eligible for this grant
